Big trade before the deadline. . .in basketball?

While the trade deadline for MLB has just passed (4:00 PM E.S.T,)  the big news of the day is in the NBA and Kevin Garnett’s escape from Minnesota.  Mired on a losing team in a loser city, KG is now King of Green, becoming a boston Celtic this afternoon in the biggest trade for a single player in NBA history.  It took a total of FIVE players AND two first round draft picks to pry Garnett from the Timberwolves.  Many people see this as Minnesota G.M. Kevin McHale’s final move as a Celtic.  As we all know, McHale and Bird and Ainge won three rings together as Celtic’s, and now McHale has traded his franchise player to the franchise that gave him a career as well as his good buddy Danny Ainge.  Ainge is currently the G.M. of the Celtics.

Pedro’s return around the corner?

Pedro Martinez

Today Pedro Martinez pitched three simulated innings against minor leaguers in Port St. Lucie, FL as the chatter gets louder about his recovery from shoulder sugery last September. Tomorrow, after seeing how Pedro’s body reacts to the work today, the team is expected to announce whether he will begin his rehab assignment or pitch another simulated game. IF the next step Pedro takes is his rehab assignment, that could mean Pedro would be throwing for the Port St. Lucie Mets as early as THIS WEEKEND! Once assigned to the Minors, he would have thirty days until he had to be called up to bigs. If Pedro pitches for St. Lucie on Sunday, he could conceivabley take the mound Thursday, August 23 at home verse the Padres or in that weekend series against the Dodgers. We shall wait and see!!!

Does this mean we’re not friends anymore?

arod2.jpg

Today Derek Jeter responded to A-Rods comments about their friendship. “Do we eat dinner together every night anymore? No?” Those were A-rods words yesterday when questioned about his friendship with Derek Jeter. Derek and Alex were best friends ten or twelve years ago when they were coming up in the New York and Texas famr systems respectively. A-rods admitted cooling of their friendship stems from a 2001 Esquire article in which he states, “Jeter’s been blessed with great talent around him,” Alex says. “He’s never had to lead. He can just go and play and have fun.” Jeter insists that their relationship makes no difference, they are both professionals. “They can make great music,” says Woodie Paige on Around the Horn today on ESPN. We’ll see if this effects the Yankees into the rest of spring training and the rest of the season.

A-Rod writes childrens book, bans press from press conference!

Duh-Rod!

This guy can’t do ANYTHING right in this city.  While trying to do a book signing in Midtown yesterday, chaos errupted when the reporters covering the event “got too close.”  The only thing they got close to was A-Rods ego, and the now $252 Million question, will he opt out of his contract and jet out of New York?  His company line is he is only concerned about winning championships, he just doesn’t like to help out during the playoffs.  But seriously, if he wants to win a championship, he better improve on his 1-23 during the last post season.  What a loser!
